12/20 through 12/26

Monday 12/20:  After about seven weeks of building up my base in weight lifting, I started a more ultra running style of lifting this morning. I did 3 sets of 20 of deep squats at 95 lbs.  Did 3 sets of 20 of standing elevated calf raises at 115 lbs.  Did 3 sets of 20 of leg extensions at 35 lbs.  Did 3 sets of 20 of hamstring curls at 35 lbs. Did 3 sets of 20 of seated calf raises at 20 lbs.  Did 6 sets of 20 sit-ups at steep incline.

Side note: doing 3 sets of 20, even at a much lighter weight, is much, much more difficult than 3 sets of 8 with heavier weights. This may seem obvious, but I did not fully appreciate how much more difficult it would be.  However, 3 sets of 20 will likely replicate an ultra better than 3 sets of 8. By doing 3 sets of 20, I can build muscle mass and also muscle endurance. I also suffered from the same desire to throw up/pass out after working out as I did on 12/16. This is not fun. I'm wondering if it is b/c of low glucose or what; but I'd like to get over it though.

Tuesday 12/21: did 2 sets of 8 and 1 set of 6 of bench press at 115 lbs. Did 2 sets of 8 and 1 set of 4 of standing military press at 55 lbs.  Did 3 sets of 8 of standing cable pulls simulating chest flys at 80 lbs. Did 3 sets of 8 of shoulder raises from waist to eye level, straight in front w/ 20 lb dumbells, and 3 sets of 8 of shoulder raises from waist to eye level, to the side w/ 15 lb dumbells.

Wednesday 12/22: played 60 minutes of raquetball.

Thursday 12/23: unintended off day! I had all my workout and work clothes packed and ready to go, but I forgot to set my alarm last night! Oh well. Maybe I needed an extra day of rest.  I hope to run tomorrow.

Friday 12/24: ran 1 hour, 15 minutes, hiting several good sized hills. I actually decided to start walking/power hiking up the hills rather than running, as this is more realistic to racing Leadville.  I have also read in a number of places that walking uphill uses different muscles than running uphill. So, I might as well start getting the walking muscles conditioned.

Saturday 12/25: ran two miles at a fairly hard pace, coming in at about 14 minutes.
